The New Dow Jones Indexes Website Stinks!

By JLP | March 3, 2009

I have a confession to make: I DON’T LIKE CHANGE.

Okay, that’s not entirely true. I like change for the better. But, I have found when it comes to web offerings, companies usually make changes in order to offer less than before or slap some sort of price tag on what was formerly free information. Such is the case with the new Dow Jones Indexes website.

I visited their website this morning and found that they have totally changed up the Dow Jones Industrial Average website. In order to view any information at all, they require a registration. I don’t mind registering but they want your address, phone number, and email address. Why? So they can send you stuff.

Then, once you are logged in, they take you to this newly designed, dumbed-down version of what used to be a SUPERB website. It’s totally useless! I even signed up for “premium” access on a trial basis to see what it was about. It’s no better.

Oh well, it was good while it lasted. I’m sad. I used to use their information to come up with some interesting posts for AFM readers (I used their information but I still had to run all the calculations myself).

Everything changes…

I’ve never given my “real” info – ever. Especially my phone number. If anyone’s interested, I always use

    Foo Barista
    123 A St
    Anytown, USA, 94043.
    (650) 555-1212

Note that to let their marketing people have “something”, I give them a real zipcode, but that’s it. The zipcode is enough for them to sell web ads.

Horrible idea. At least they don’t try to charge you to see the content.

I’ve had some luck circumventing required registration using http://www.bugmenot.com

Never used the Dow Jones Indexes website – sounds like I don’t need to bother!

Foo, you won’t get the Administrations’ checks if you don’t use your real address :)

That is why we keep currency-x.com on the same line, reagardless of updates, currency table udpate, backend update, it does not affect the people using it and besides it’s the type of information you do get free and you should get free.

I am pro change, but some times it stinks indeed.

I won’t be getting any Obamachecks; I’m “rich”.

Of course, if he sends his tax stormtroopers to 123 A St, I’d be happy…

My friend, we in Congress will take care of your grievances against this evil corporation. It’s very distressing to hear that some people are still trying to profit while most little people are suffering, especially when they want to charge for data that should be available for free. After all we all own the stock market and its data points.

It’s about time we take Rupert Murdoch to the cleaners. I will bring this up in my next meeting with Ms. Pelosi.

    Sincerely,

    Barney’s Frank
