Larry Winget: ‘The Secret’ is a Total Load of Crap!

Once again, Larry hits the nail on the head with his latest blog post, ‘The Secret’ is a Total Load of Crap. In case you’re not familiar, ‘The Secret’ is a book that gained lots of attention when it was featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show. I watched part of one of the shows when she was talking about the book and even featured the author. It was enough to convince me that I didn’t want to read the book.

Anyway, Larry Winget, has written a blog post about that book and about the new age philosophy of success. I like this quote from his post:

They [new age authors and gurus] also love to talk about increasing your deservability. Which translates to me into increasing your sense of entitlement. You are not entitled to a damn thing. You are rewarded for your efforts. No effort = no reward. The truth is that you deserve exactly what you have.

Remember that old Biblical saying, “You reap what you sow?” Most people aren’t reaping much these days because they haven’t done any sowing! I grew up in the country where we ate what we raised and trust me when I say that “sowing” is work! Even the reaping is work. But the reaping is the payoff for the work you put out there in the first place. Sadly, many people today are expecting to reap when they didn’t sow a damn thing. It doesn’t work that way.

I agree with Larry: we don’t deserve anything other than what is mentioned in the Declaration of Independence:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

Rock on, Larry. Rock on.

  1. I like Larry a lot, but he forgot that he personally wrote about using the "Secret" in his book, "Shut Up, Stop Whining & Get A Life" which I loved by the way. In this book he claims he was tired of being sick so he decided he wasn't going to be sick anymore and through the power of that thought he hasn't been sick since. Eerily familiar.

    I enjoyed reading the "Secret" I didn't pay attention and pull out the mystical junk in there that everyone complains about. I focused on the messages of positive thoughts, attitude and gratitude.

    I think Larry is a smart guy, you want to get a lot of attention from the media bash the most popular book for the last two years. Smart move Larry.

  2. Wait a minute. Obama told me that I am entitled to more. What's this reaping and sowing that you are talking about? Hard Work? Ha!

  3. Of course that stuff is a bunch of hooey. Hooey that people pay money to read! Brilliant idea… spinning "motivation" out of nothing and making $$$ in book sales.

    I hope Winget makes some $ encouraging people to confront their mistakes and get real – that's more useful than annoying others with videos promoting a "secret" that winds up being nothing.

  5. The entitlement started long before Mr. Obama became president. As in, when we had a balanced budget as recently as 2000. It wasn't Obama who decided to gut those budgets, but his republican predecessor. But hey, that's easy to ignore. It's also easy to ignore the looming entitlement problem that we'll have in the next 20-30 years when baby boomers retire. But I'm sure Obama will be blamed for that as well.

  6. What was wrong, or misinterpreted, from the Secret was that you just need to envision something and the universe will provide it.

    That isn't the case. I think the power of the Secret is that it got people to be very specific about their goals. So many Americans don't even write down or think about their true goals.

    Even the folks in the Secret movie admit that one must work towards the goal. But, by envisioning it and asking for it, you start to see paths towards the goal. It really isn't any different than when someone prays for a better career, more money, etc. God doesn't just hand it to you. God helps those who help themselves. However, God will help lay the path, but it still requires the person to follow it – meaning do something.

    So don't be so literal with the Secret. It requires work, not just hope.
