OT Humor: The New Life Alert Commercial Creeps Me Out

By JLP | July 9, 2009

This has nothing at all to do with personal finance but I thought I’d share it with you anyway. The new Life Alert commercial gives me the creeps. Watch and you’ll see what I mean:

“THIS IS LIFE ALERT! YOU HAVE BEEN DETECTED. LEAVE NOW!”

Can you imagine all the ways this technology could be misused???

“THIS IS LIFE ALERT! YOU ARE NOT MR. JOHNSON. PUT YOUR CLOTHES ON AND LEAVE NOW!”

“THIS IS LIFE ALERT! YOUR MOM SAID NO COOKIES IN THE LIVING ROOM! PUT THEM UP NOW!”

“THIS IS LIFE ALERT! THAT IS YOUR THIRD BEER! MAKE IT YOUR LAST ONE!”

“THIS IS LIFE ALERT! I THINK THAT’S ENOUGH POTATO CHIPS! PUT THEM UP…NOW!”

Okay, enough already.

Enjoy your weekend. This will probably be my last post until Monday. We are taking the kids to the water park tomorrow.

The argument that the US suffered violent economic cycles in the laissez faire markets of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries from which we have been spared by the wise actions of the Fed and counter cyclical federal spending is demolished in two ways. First, these periods were characterized by frequent overzealous lending of fiat money, sometimes by private banks, sometimes by banks set up by the government, and it doesn’t matter who creates the bogus money. Second, much of the economic history of the period is stated in terms of nominal dollars, and in some periods, when the money was actually stable while production increased, nominal prices fell, as they must

I think many people, particularly the elderly who don’t know any better, are willing to give up _alot_ of privacy for a _little_ safety. You’ll notice it at the airport. Old ladies who need 20 minutes to put their shoes back on gladly take them off for the TSA goons. Same little old lady has no qualms about the X-Ray vision machine either as she winks to the guy checking her out on the screen. Same appeal to old people with GPS tracking devices to get you a discount on your auto insurance. “I go 10 MPH under the speed limit, sign me up!” Sounds great until that GPS finds their vehicle _inside_ the Walmart…

Can you imagine the voice if they hire someone like the wimpy girl from the Police Academy movies? “Oh, pretty PLEASE, get out! Oh my GAWD!”
