It’s Getting Harder to Tell Real Websites From Fake Websites

By JLP | October 1, 2009

Last week I had a website popup while I was reading an article on a news website. I don’t recall the details but the popup looked just like a blog entry or a story from a news website. It was hard to tell the difference. The only thing that tipped me off that it was an advertisement (or scam) was that every link on the page lead directly back to the homepage—even the fake advertisements.

What’s really troubling is that I’m finding these ads on prominate websites like newspapers, magazines, and local news stations. Heck, they could even be popping up on my blog in the Adsense window for all I know.

In my opinion, these fake websites should be illegal (they may already be illegal) unless there is some sort of indication that they are in fact an advertisement.

Bottom line is DON’T BELIEVE ANYTHING YOU READ ON THE INTERNET unless you can back it up.

Point taken . . . I now have a copy of the ad on a DVD for safe keeping, thus making it true.

“Fake” websites should be illegal? No they shouldn’t. You need to learn how to use this thing called the inter-web.

You mean, I’m NOT getting that $48 million from that prince in Nigeria?

Just what we need, the government to step in and police the web. Come on JLP does that really sound like a good idea?

Jordan, I was being somewhat facetious in my comment. I don’t want more government regulation.

I agree. Every website should be at *least* as reliable as dhmo.org!
