I thought this was pretty funny. It’s the card my daughter made for her mom for Mother’s Day. I think the reason she didn’t just start over with a new piece of paper is becuase that was teh only piece of paper she had that was that size. Anyway, I laughed a lot over this one yesterday. Oh, and I came to the full realization that she is my daughter…hahaha.

Anyway, I hope all the moms out there had a very happy Mother’s Day! Sorry this is late. I tried to post this yesterday but wasn’t at my computer and I couldn’t get the picture to upload via my iPad.

After posting my daughter’s “If I Had $100″ piece yesterday, I got to thinking that it would be cool to compose a list of money-related questions to ask our kids and then share the responses with each other here on AFM.

So here are ten questions I came up with that I think would be fun to ask a kid:

• What is money?

• Where does money come from?

• Name one thing you would buy if you had $100.

• How much money do you think it takes to be considered “rich”?

• Would you consider our family “rich”?

• What job do you want to do when you grow up?

• How much do you think that job will pay?

• How much do you think a new house costs? A car?

• At what age do you think people retire?

• How much do you think people need to have saved up for retirement?

The last two may require some explanation and it could be that yr child is too young to understand. Regardless, I would still like to see what answers your kids come up with.

Please email your child’s response (along with their age and sex) to me (JLP – at – AllFinancialMatters.com). NOTE: please dont coach your kids. I want To see what the kids think no matter how silly their reponses may be. I’ll compile them into a blog post.

Thanks!

You must be a resident of North America (I won’t ship internationally).

I’ll randomly-select a winner early next week. Good luck!

I’m not a happy person. I mean, I am happy, but I haven’t been happy here on AFM for a while. I guess I have allowed the happenings of the last several years to weigh down on me. I post a lot about the mortgage crisis and the seeming irresponsibility of all those involved. But…where has that gotten us? Nowhere, really.

This has been on my mind a lot lately.

I want to add an element to AFM that hasn’t been here in a long time. That element is optimism. Optimism that embraces personal responsibility (something that seems to have been snuffed out by the victim mentality). Optimism that drives change.

That doesn’t mean that we don’t need to look at the events of the day with a critical eye. We do. One of the things I am most proud of about AFM is our ability to discuss topics without getting (too) angry. But, I want to go from simply grousing to helping people understand how to move through it.

How do I plan on doing this? Well, through topics like:

• How to be a better employee

• How to find the job you were meant to do

• How to set goals

• How to get out of debt

• Studying Napoleon Hill’s “Law of Success” and other personal improvement literature (the classics)

• How to save for the future

• Teaching your kids about personal finances

• Interviews with successful business owners to find out what does and does not work

There’s more. Lots more.

So, if you’re interested, join me here on Monday morning as we’ll go over chapter one of Napoleon Hill’s classic, Think and Grow Rich*. It’s a short book and an easy read. The perfect place to start. Most libraries have copies. You might even be able to find it for free online. I did a search and found a pdf copy but couldn’t get it to open. You can also purchase the Kindle edition* for a whopping $.99.

So…

Starting next week, AFM will have a new contributor. Her name is Lindsay. She and her husband have five kids and a lot of debt. Her desire to get out of debt is the reason I asked her to write for AFM. Since they are in a different place than my family is, I thought it would be interesting to have her write about the topics related to their quest to get out of debt.

It’s important to note that she is not an expert. She’ll be writing from her experience and will be researching and learning along the way.

I have limited experience in hosting other writers so we’ll see how this goes. I have every reason to believe it will go great.

If you would like to reach Lindsay, you can email her at
