Second, I’d like to wish my wife’s cousin, Stacey, a happy 19th birthday. She and her older sister were flower girls our wedding. She wasn’t even 3-years old back then. Wow…time flies.

1. We start off with an interesting story I read about how <a href="http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/tax_refugees_staging_escape_from_qb4pItQ71UXIc0i6cd3UpK"target="_blank">rich New Yorkers are leaving the area to escape taxes. We can debate forever on whether the rich are paying enough taxes or not but I can tell you that if taxation becomes to burdensome, they’ll pack up and leave.

2. MoneyWatch has the <a href="http://moneywatch.bnet.com/retirement-planning/article/401k-mistakes-to-avoid/356717/"target="_blank">12 Dumbest 401(k) mistakes to avoid.

3. MightyBargainHunter says that <a href="http://www.mightybargainhunter.com/2009/10/28/the-one-thing-you-can-count-on/"target="_blank">the only thing you can count on in this economy is that you can’t count on anything. Thoroughly confused? Read his post and he’ll explain it.

4. Jonathan has a nice <a href="http://www.mymoneyblog.com/archives/2009/10/learning-about-bonds-interest-rate-risk-time-horizons-and-duration.html"target="_blank">primer on bonds.

5. While we’re on the basics, Jeremy has <a href="http://genxfinance.com/2009/06/04/mutual-fund-fees-for-beginners-loads-expense-ratios-and-share-classes/"target="_blank">mutual funds fees for beginners.

6. Ron asks a good question: <a href="http://www.thewisdomjournal.com/Blog/no-such-thing-as-good-debt/"target="_blank">Is there no such thing as good debt? Maybe there’s not good debt but I do think that some debt is better than other debt.

7. Now for a little controversy: <a href="http://www.erictyson.com/articles/20090313"target="_blank">Dave Ramsey gets kickbacks from investment brokers… The article is a little old, but I thought it was worth sharing. (Thanks, Dylan!)

8. Allan Roth with <a href="http://moneywatch.bnet.com/investing/blog/irrational-investor/retirement-planning-most-of-wall-street-doesn%e2%80%99t-want-you-to-know-about/667/"target="_blank">What Wall Street Doesn’t Want You to Know About Retirment Planning, which is a review of a book I’m currently reading.

9. Donna Freedman with <a href="http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/SavingandDebt/SaveMoney/12-healthful-foods-for-1-dollar-or-less.aspx"target="_blank">12 Healthy Foods for a $1 or less.

10. Lastly, here’s Brian Tracy with some advice on building self-confidence. <a href="http://www.briantracy.com/blog/personal-success/forging-your-self-confidence-part-1/"target="_blank">Part 1 and <a href="http://www.briantracy.com/blog/personal-success/forging-your-self-confidence-part-2/"target="_blank">Part 2.

Next week I’ll try to post “Ten for Tuesday” on TUESDAY!

Happy Friday!

This morning was the “Me Parade” for my daughter’s Kindergarten class. The Me Parade is when the kids march around the campus, holding flags that they created that are supposed to be all about them. It’s a really cute deal The only problem is that our daughter didn’t want to say goodbye and started crying a pleading with us to take her home.

After that, my wife and I went and had a nice breakfast at Cracker Barrel. It’s nice to be without kids every now and again.

Something I’d like to try to start doing on Fridays is a sort of roundup on things I have found around the internet. Stuff that I want to mention but don’t want to dedicate an entire post too. Some will be related to personal finance and others many not.

Anyway, here are this week’s picks:

My cousins sent me a link to this article: <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/retirement/article/107761/what-you-need-to-know-about-social-security.html?mod=retire-planning"target="_blank">What You Need to Know About Social Security.

Then I saw that <a href="http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/09/17/MNF619OSF4.DTL"target="_blank">the mayor of San Francisco wants to penalize retailers that sell sugared drinks. What I found interesting were the stats at the end of the article:

• $41 billion Amount spent treating obesity in California each year.

• 41 percent Kids ages 2-11 who drink at least one soda every day.

• 62 percent Adolescents 12-17 who drink at least one soda every day.

• 39 pounds Amount of sugar consumed over one year if you drink one soda a day.

• 17 teaspoons Amount of sugar in a 20-ounce serving of soda.

• 278 calories Increased number Americans consume each day compared with 30 years ago.

• 43 percent Share of new calories attributable to soda.

Source: “Bubbling Over: Soda Consumption and Its Link to Obesity in California” by UCLA Center for Health Policy Research and the California Center for Public Health Advocacy

Here are <a href="http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Banking/BetterBanking/10ThingsYourBankWontTellYou.aspx"target="_blank">10 Things Your Bank Won’t Tell You.

Stacey sent me a link to an article detailing some of the <a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/politics/sns-ap-us-college-aid,0,7666865.story"target="_blank">changes coming to college financial aid.

Lastly, we have <a href="http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Banking/YourCreditRating/the-new-math-of-FICO-credit-scores.aspx"target="_blank">The New Math Behind FICO Scores.

NOTE: if you find an article that you think is worth a look, feel free to send it my way (JLP – at – AllFinancialMatters.com). PLEASE…NO SPAM!

1. My friend, Lindsay, details <a href="http://downs-lovebugs.blogspot.com/2009/01/kids-chores-allowances.html"target="_blank">how she and her husband are handling allowances.

2. We have a food pyramid so why not an <a href="http://www.obliviousinvestor.com/2009/01/asset-allocation-pyramid/"target="_blank">asset allocation pyramid too?

3. <a href="http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/money/personal-investing/nest-egg/overview/nest-egg-ov.htm"target="_blank">Rebuild Your Nestegg – 17 moves to secure your future now.

4. Jeremy <a href="http://genxfinance.com/2009/01/12/robert-kiyosaki-writes-something-else-i-agree-with-assets-dont-make-you-rich/"target="_blank">agrees with Robert Kiyosaki—again… – Look for a Robert and Jeremy book in the near future…

5. The Finance Buff discusses the differences between <a href="http://thefinancebuff.com/2009/01/0-percent-apr-same-as-cash-and-no-interest-no-payments.html"target="_blank">0% APR, same-as-cash, and no-interest-no-payments.

6. Protect your FICO score as <a href="http://www.mymoneyblog.com/archives/2009/01/more-inactive-credit-cards-being-closed-protect-your-fico-credit-score.html"target="_blank">more inactive credit card accounts are closed. – From a bank’s point-of-view, this makes perfect sense. People are losing their jobs and the ecomony is down. The last thing a bank wants is for people with no income to suddenly break out the credit cards.

7. The Digerati Life offers up some <a href="http://www.thedigeratilife.com/blog/index.php/2009/01/12/job-interview-techniques-preparing-for-interview/"target="_blank">pointers on preparing for a job interview.

8. Glblguy over at <a href="http://www.gatherlittlebylittle.com/2009/01/debt-lies-marriage/"target="_blank">GatherLittlebyLittle received this email and would like your advice:

I am very inspired by your website. I think I started crying at my desk when I started reading it. I am in a extremely large amount of debt. A lot of it is stuff in my husband’s name that he does not know about. I feel like failure and a thief. I wonder how I got myself into this mess and how do I manage to get out without my husband leaving me. I am scared and worried sick. I was able to make the payments before but it is getting harder and harder and there are lies after lies. I am scared my husband will leave me. I pray about this all the time and I am asking God to help me but I feel like my spiritual relationship is not strong. I am looking for help. I don’t want to lose my family.

9. The Frugal Duchess and her <a href="http://sharonhr.blogspot.com/2009/01/how-i-plan-to-create-better-budget.html"target="_blank">plan for building a better a budget.

4. Speaking of plans, here’s Digerati Life’s <a href="http://www.thedigeratilife.com/blog/index.php/2009/01/04/personal-goals-for-2009-year-in-review/"personal goals for 2009.

7. Tricia wrote about <a href="http://www.bloggingawaydebt.com/2009/01/credit-card-marketing-at-colleges-who-profits/"target="_blank">credit card offers on college campuses. She said, “I have come to realize that whenever you get a credit card through another avenue than the credit card company itself, someone is making money from selling that card to you. The same rings true for web sites and blogs that have links to credit cards.” I have always had a problem with blogs selling credit cards because none of them (at least to my knowledge) ever let their readers know that they are making money from the links. In my opinion, it’s not enough to “assume” that readers know this.

That’s it for this week. Enjoy.

BTW – Do you like Ten For Tuesday? Do you read them or am I just wasting my time? Do you like the mixture of blog posts and traditional articles or would you prefer one over the other? Please let me know by leaving a comment below.
